Frequently Asked Questions
- What’s the difference between a Counsellor and Psychotherapist?
It’s common these days for the words counselling, therapy, mental health support, and psychotherapy to be used interchangeably. Counselling tends to focus more on present concerns and solutions to them, whereas psychotherapy considers more long-standing issues and behaviours to understand how our past contributes to recurring or chronic struggles in the present. While “Counsellor” and “Counselling” aren’t regulated or protected terms in Canada, the term “Psychotherapist” and what constitutes psychotherapy are regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) and the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). As a member of the OCSWSSW, my work and use of the term “Psychotherapist” aligns with the recommendations set forth by this regulatory body.
- How many sessions will I need?
There is no hard and fast rule about this, as so much depends on each person’s needs and goals, how frequently they attend counselling, and how engaged they are throughout the process. While there are some counselling models that offer brief work (3-6 sessions), that isn’t how my services are structured, as most of the people I work with tend to participate for lengthier periods of time.
- Do you work with children, couples, or families?
The bulk of my work involves individual or couples work with clients over the age of 19. I tend to have longer waitlists for couples counselling and EMDR treatment. If you feel strongly about working with me in a different context, please do reach out. Please note that I’m only able to work with residents of Ontario.
- Is it mandatory that we begin with the 20-Minute Consultation?
I strongly encourage all new clients to take advantage of this free consultation opportunity; its important to use this time to interview your potential therapist, ask about their background, training and process, and get a sense if they’d be a good fit for your needs and personality. Research has repeatedly shown that this “good fit” is critical in ensuring a positive therapeutic experience and successful treatment outcomes. If you’ve worked with me previously and would like to return after a period of absence, you are more than welcome to resume services without the initial consult.
- Will my workplace Benefits and Insurance cover your services?
I have a Master of Social Work (MSW) and membership with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW); this means that I am a Registered Social Worker (RSW). While I do not offer direct billing, most benefit providers tend to cover services provided by MSWs and/or RSWs. Please check with your benefits provider to get a full understanding of what your coverage is like, and whether any services you receive from me will be covered under your plan.
